Feeding America's response to Hurricane Dorian and how you can help
In the past week, Hurricane Dorian has devastated islands in the Bahamas with massive flooding and destructive winds. Now making its way up the east coast, Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and parts of Virginia have been battered by heavy rain, wind and storm surge. As of Friday morning, more than 400,000 homes and businesses were without power in the Carolinas and Virginia.
How Feeding America is helping in the United States
The Feeding America network of food banks is responding and impacted food banks along the coast have been supporting shelters to assist those displaced by the storm, gathering resources with local emergency feeding partners and taking additional steps to prepare for the impacts.
How can I help in the Bahamas?
As a domestic organization, Feeding America and its food banks cannot serve communities outside of the United States. However, if you are looking to help, we encourage you to donate to the following disaster relief organizations that are currently serving the Bahamas:
- The Salvation Army | The Salvation Army is providing emergency assistance to survivors and first responders.
- The Red Cross | Red Cross volunteers and pre-positioned relief supplies—such as tarps, hygiene items, jerrycans, and cell phone chargers—are at the ready.
- Direct Relief | Gifts can be designated to Hurricane Dorian on their website. Direct Relief is responding with medicine and supplies.
- Global Giving’s Hurricane Dorian Relief Fund | This disaster relief fund will support people impacted by Hurricane Dorian's storm system in the form of emergency supplies like food, water, and medicine, in addition to longer-term recovery assistance to help residents recover and rebuild.
